Friday was a good day (NS, KJRY, BNSF and UP Action)!


This morning, I caught Norfolk Southern’s D49 train departing East Peoria. NS 6172, NS 5317 and NS 9464 have TP&W 3878 (probably enroute to Metro East Industries in E. St. Louis, IL) and 51 cars. Scenes are at N. Main Street (1:20) and Farmdale (whole train). TP&W 3878 was the last unit in the area painted in RailAmerica’s red, silver and blue “Captain America” scheme. Its departure was bound to happen eventually.


While D49 prepared for departure, Norfolk Southern grain train 54E was getting ready as well. It departed East Peoria about 1.5 hours after D49. Here it is at Goodfield with UP 8883, NS 5329, NS 9454 & NS 7212 and 85 cars of corn loaded at Des Moines, Iowa (Iowa Interstate acts as haulage agent from there to Peoria).

 
After capturing the NS grain train, I spent some time in Bloomington then decided to return home. I'm glad I did because I caught three departing freights in succession. First was the Keokuk Junction Railway local departing East Peoria with the world-famous A-B-A set of F units and GP20 2003 pulling 16 cars at S. Darst Street in Peoria. Note the ex-Rock Island covered hopper. 


BNSF's M-PEIGAL (Manifest, Peoria IL to Galesburg IL) actually left East Peoria around the same time as D49 but tied up on the New Long Main to re-arrange power. An empty coal train parked next to it on the main track because the crew's hours of service expired at 1030. Both trains were re-crewed by mid-afternoon with the empty coal departing first, the M-PEIGAL about 30 minutes later. I caught the latter at W. Farmington Road. What a cool power lash-up. BNSF 557, BNSF 2889, BNSF 334, BNSF 1520, BNSF 2660 & BNSF 1578 and 35 cars. This includes the A-B-A geep set that worked the same train May 4-5 this year. 


Finally, I caught Union Pacific's regular Friday MPECL (Manifest, Peoria IL to Clinton IA) at Akron (just north of Peoria). UP 8628 & UP 3903 have a healthy 60 cars. It appears track speeds have returned to 40 mph, at least in this spot.

Black Band Distillery, presently operating at 1000 SW Adams Street, is planning to expand to the vacant property at 2400 SW Washington Street. That is according to WCBU News .  Although the article omits it, this property has a long history with the local distilling industry. National Cooperage & Woodenware Co. constructed a plant there in 1900, though a predecessor apparently had begun barrel making operations there c. 1885. This firm survived Prohibition (1920-1933) because the barrels could also be used for packing corn syrup, condensed milk, cider, vinegar, liquid chemicals, flavoring extracts, etc. Hiram Walker & Sons, which purchased one-third to one-half of its production, gained control of National Cooperage in 1946. A new four-story expansion began in the fall of 1964 only to be destroyed by a tornado on September 14, 1965. TP&W-to-TZPR Transfer 10-14-23

I happened upon this train pulled out of the TP&W's East Peoria Yard onto the Peoria Sub. I quickly concluded it was a switch crew making up a transfer to TZPR, and was rewarded for waiting around. Radio chatter indicated nine loads and 50 empties. The first three cars contained zinc oxide for Union Pacific (via Tazewell & Peoria RR, rather than via direct interchange). Embedded in the consist were six covered hoppers likely containing phosphate fertilizer for Mosaic Crop Nutrition in the Pekin Bottoms. This is the second time I've seen empty tank cars with Incobrasa Industries markings. Normally, I'd expect loads moving westbound. Peoria Int'l Airport Awarded $500,000 In SCASD Program (UPDATED X2)

Peoria Int'l Airport has been awarded $500,000 for assistance in regaining a link to a western connecting hub. The grant, announced Friday, is part of the Small Community Air Service Development program (SCASD). Funds are used to offset financial losses by the airline providing service. On many instances, funds aren't needed. The Airport Authority prefers Denver, Houston, Phoenix or Salt Lake City. Denver and Houston are hubs for United Airlines, Phoenix is a hub for American Airlines and Salt Lake City is a hub for Delta Airlines.  It is difficult to imagine that American Airlines would offer Peoria-Phoenix nonstops when passengers can make good connections through Dallas/Ft. Worth. Houston was already tried and didn't work out due to load factors. I don't see Delta Airlines being interested in Peoria-Salt Lake City nonstops.  Both American Airlines and United Airlines provided letters of support.
