Union Pacific MCLPE 11-26-17


I'm unsure how long this train has been sitting on Edelstein Siding. 

I've blogged before on Union Pacific Railroad's MPECL, which predictably leaves Peoria around 4:00pm every Tuesday and Friday afternoon. 

Copunterpart MCLPE operates at night, departing Clinton, Iowa close to midnight and arriving Peoria before sunrise, Wednesday and Sunday. Only on the longest days of the year in late-spring and early-summer, can one catch this run with hope of the sun shining.

So I was excited to find the nocturnal MCLPE sitting out in the open along Union Pacific Road. UP locomotives 8502 & 5038 have 31 cars. The Peoria Wayfreight (LPD01) crew will likely fetch the train Monday morning.

    Wait so it's on Friday's too? Will this mess up next Friday's schedule and throw them off i wonder? I might consider going after it if it's still going to be on Friday. I might try for it at Farmington Road or Pottstown where ever the best place to park without being bothered by passer byers .

      They'll probably be on the normal routine this week. The wayfreight crew will likely pull the train into Adams Street Yard first thing Monday morning. They should still have time to classifiy it, work the KJRY, TZPR and TP&W interchanges and built the MPECL in time for departure Tuesday afternoon. That would put the train back on its normal routine - returning as MCLPE Wednesday before sunrise and departure as MPECL Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, it is getting dark by 5:00pm now, so not much daylight left.

      The Peoria Wayfreight crew probably had to create space at Adams Street Yard before bringing in Sunday's MCLPE.

    In the gondola, were those bales of scrap, heading for Keystone?

      Yes, the scrap metal load is most likely for Keystone Steel & Wire (via TZPR delivery).

TP&W-to-TZPR Transfer 10-14-23

I happened upon this train pulled out of the TP&W's East Peoria Yard onto the Peoria Sub. I quickly concluded it was a switch crew making up a transfer to TZPR, and was rewarded for waiting around. Radio chatter indicated nine loads and 50 empties. The first three cars contained zinc oxide for Union Pacific (via Tazewell & Peoria RR, rather than via direct interchange). Embedded in the consist were six covered hoppers likely containing phosphate fertilizer for Mosaic Crop Nutrition in the Pekin Bottoms. This is the second time I've seen empty tank cars with Incobrasa Industries markings. Normally, I'd expect loads moving westbound. Peoria Int'l Airport Awarded $500,000 In SCASD Program (UPDATED X2)

Peoria Int'l Airport has been awarded $500,000 for assistance in regaining a link to a western connecting hub. The grant, announced Friday, is part of the Small Community Air Service Development program (SCASD). Funds are used to offset financial losses by the airline providing service. On many instances, funds aren't needed. The Airport Authority prefers Denver, Houston, Phoenix or Salt Lake City. Denver and Houston are hubs for United Airlines, Phoenix is a hub for American Airlines and Salt Lake City is a hub for Delta Airlines.  It is difficult to imagine that American Airlines would offer Peoria-Phoenix nonstops when passengers can make good connections through Dallas/Ft. Worth. Houston was already tried and didn't work out due to load factors. I don't see Delta Airlines being interested in Peoria-Salt Lake City nonstops.  Both American Airlines and United Airlines provided letters of support.
