TZPR Industry Job, Union Pacific Coal MTs, Iowa Interstate PESI 12-20-24

After work this afternoon, I headed toward the downtown library as usual, but radio chatter lured me to my first of three encounters.

A Tazewell & Peoria Railroad Industry Job was at BioUrja Renewables' South Yard (crews and dispatchers still call it "ADM South Yard") asking permission to shove back out to Bridge Junction and then cross the river. A problem with a switch, signal, or some hardware was delaying this movement momentarily, which enabled me to get into position just in time.

Libery Steel & Wire Co's temporary (hopefully) suspension of operations most certainly has decreased business handled by the old "Kickapoo Job." Alter Metal Recycling has been sending processed scrap metal to new markets, though, in place of short-haul switch movements. Most of this seems to be moving via the Iowa Interstate to a consignee in the Chicago area.

The TZPR local train was probably switching one of the asphalt terminals (Interstate Asphalt Corp or Seneca Petroleum) enroute from Kickapoo Yard to East Peoria.

CAPTION: A Tazewell & Peoria Railroad "Industry Job" shoves four scrap-metal loaded gondolas from BioUrja Renewables LLC's South Yard in Peoria, Illinois late-afternoon Friday, December 20, 2024. The crew, enroute from Kickapoo Yard to East Peoria, was here to switch one of the asphalt terminals on the other end. TZPR 1352 has four cars.

After bagging the TZPR local, I decided on whim to check Union Pacific's Adams Street Yard, where I found a decent-sized (50 to 60ish cars) MPECL had not yet a departed. I intended to turn around in Bartonville and drive SW Adams Street in the other direction to check for signs of a crew. As I approached the Union Pacific trestle over SW Adams Street, an empty coal flew over me. I decided to head up to W. Farmington Road.

CAPTION: A Union Pacific train of coal empties rolls by W. Farmington Road near Peoria, Illinois late-afternoon Friday, December 20, 2024. UP 5808 and UP 7963 were on the point. Originating at Powerton, UP 5613 brought up the rear as DPU.

I backtracked to SW Adams Street and noticed MPECL's power was hidden underneath the viaduct, so I headed north, crossed the river to discover Iowa Interstate train PESI had departed. I crossed the river again and headed north and caught up with PESI in the North Valley. As daylight was already fading quickly, I elected to shoot video by the IVY Club. This one had quite a few scrap metal loads.

CAPTION: Iowa Interstate Railroad manifest PESI (Peoria IL to Silvis IL) rolls through Peoria Heights, Illinois late-afternoon Friday, December 20, 2024. IAIS 151 has 62 cars.
