KJRY EP Turn, TZPR Industry 3, UP Coal Train 8-1-24

I learned that BNSF's M-GALPEI was enroute this afternoon, so I left home. When I exited I-474 onto SW Adams Street, I noticed the Keokuk Junction Railway's East Peoria Turn waiting at Iowa Junction for instructions from the Tazewell & Peoria Railroad dispatcher. The BNSF train could wait, and I'd likely see it enter TZPR shortly anyway.

Soon after the KJRY train was by my position at Krause Avenue, I headed for W. Farmington Road and waited. Off and on, I heard some chatter on BNSF's Peoria Sub radio frequency (161.385), but could not tell what was going on. It turns out, M-GALPEI got by me before I began to parallel the line along Kickapoo Creek Road. I turned back and found it stuffed into the New Long as a westbound grain train left the area. I did not see it happen, but M-GALPEI's crew may have simply flipped back to Galesburg, taking over the grain train from a TP&W crew at S. Darst Street. 
 
When the BNSF grain train was clear onto home rails, the Tazewell & Peoria Railroad's old "Kickapoo Job," now apparently known as "Industry 3," rolled by me.

 Finally, I attempted to catch the BNSF grain train but saw a Union Pacific coal train instead.

I lingered in the area until almost 1900 hours, but never knew if the KJRY local left East Peoria by then or not. I never saw it.

Black Band Distillery, presently operating at 1000 SW Adams Street, is planning to expand to the vacant property at 2400 SW Washington Street. That is according to WCBU News .  Although the article omits it, this property has a long history with the local distilling industry. National Cooperage & Woodenware Co. constructed a plant there in 1900, though a predecessor apparently had begun barrel making operations there c. 1885. This firm survived Prohibition (1920-1933) because the barrels could also be used for packing corn syrup, condensed milk, cider, vinegar, liquid chemicals, flavoring extracts, etc. Hiram Walker & Sons, which purchased one-third to one-half of its production, gained control of National Cooperage in 1946. A new four-story expansion began in the fall of 1964 only to be destroyed by a tornado on September 14, 1965. PIA - A History: Chicago & Southern Airlines Crash Oct. 21, 1971

The only fatal Peoria-area plane crash involving a scheduled air carrier occurred October 21, 1971 when Chicago & Southern Airlines Flight #804 went down while attempting to land in poor weather conditions. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident report can be viewed here , but I'll summarize the crash, what led up to it and the aftermath.  ILL-FATED FLIGHT #804 Chicago & Southern Airlines began flying between Peoria and Chicago's Meigs Field on July 7, 1969. Beech 18S and DHC-6 "Twin Otter" aircraft were used for its flights, the former type at Peoria. In 1970, C&S introduced an aircraft known as the ATECO Westwind II. It was a Beech 18S with heavy modifications including a seven-foot fuselage extension, two turboprop engines and a tri-cycle landing gear. An ATECO Westwind II operated ill-fated C&S Flight #804. TP&W-to-TZPR Transfer 10-14-23

I happened upon this train pulled out of the TP&W's East Peoria Yard onto the Peoria Sub. I quickly concluded it was a switch crew making up a transfer to TZPR, and was rewarded for waiting around. Radio chatter indicated nine loads and 50 empties. The first three cars contained zinc oxide for Union Pacific (via Tazewell & Peoria RR, rather than via direct interchange). Embedded in the consist were six covered hoppers likely containing phosphate fertilizer for Mosaic Crop Nutrition in the Pekin Bottoms. This is the second time I've seen empty tank cars with Incobrasa Industries markings. Normally, I'd expect loads moving westbound.
