Norfolk Southern D49 7-15-25

Given the length of today's Norfolk Southern local on its return leg to Normal, it is obvious it did not run on Monday. The train's 57 cars are an interesting study.

(1) The GAMX tank car is similar those used by IMRR-served Agridyne LLC/Timberlake Sales at Crescent (Pekin) for liquid feed loading, though I supposed it could have been loaded with steepwater by TZPR-served Alto Pekin LLC.

(2) All covered hoppers marked "grain product," totaling of 21, probably arrived on at least two Iowa Interstate train SIPEs last week. Nos. 39-42 were on Thursday's SIPE. I don't know if SIPE ran over the weekend, but the empty coil steel car on Tuesday's D49 would have been on an SIPE, but wasn't on Thursday's train.

(3) The three STSX corn syrup tank cars, owned by Primient (formerly Tate & Lyle, nee A. E. Staley) were on Thursday's SIPE. I'd guess the covered hoppers ahead and behind - two each - were as well.

(4) The GATX tank car (#24) appeared empty, and lacked haz-mat placards. It might be an animal fat car returning to Tyson Fresh Meats at Logansport, Indiana.

(5) There were nine granulated slag and two plastic granule loads from the Illinois & Midland RR (IMRR). The former were shipped from Enviri/Harsco plant at Powerton. The latter were Equistar Chemicals storage-in-transit cars.

(6) One denatured alcohol (UN 1987) and seven industrial alcohol (UN 1170) loads might all be from one or more of Alto's three Pekin plants, particularly those next to CO2 refrigerated liquid loads.

(7) Seven CO2 refrigerated liquid loads are from either Linde or Messer plants at Pekin. The former can load two at a time, the latter at least three.

(8) Three more loads of coiled wire rod from Liberty Steel & Wire is a good thing to see.

CAPTION: Norfolk Southern Railway train D49 (Normal IL to E. Peoria IL) is shown departing the Tazewell & Peoria Railroad in East Peoria, Illinois late-afternoon Tuesday, July 15, 2025. NS 6923 and NS 6963 have 57 cars.
